Recycling is an important way to reduce waste, protect the planet, and help people in need. But recycling can also be creative and inspiring. Calluna Upcycling is a great example of how recycling can be used for good causes. We turn unwanted graphics into useful and beautiful products, all while helping the environment and supporting the community.
What Is Calluna Upcycling?
Calluna Upcycling is more than just a business—it’s a way to make a positive difference. My team takes old or discarded fabric, like flags, banners and stands, and transforms them into new, useful things. These upcycled products aren’t just eco-friendly; they’re also designed to help raise money for charity and support local people.
Why Recycling Is So Important
Every year, billions of tons of waste are created around the world, and only a small amount gets recycled. This leads to problems like overflowing landfills, polluted oceans, and wasted natural resources. Recycling helps reduce these problems by giving old materials a new purpose, saving energy, and cutting down on pollution.
For Calluna Upcycling, recycling isn’t just about protecting the planet—it’s also about making life better for people. By turning waste into new products, we can show how small changes can have a big impact.
How Calluna Helps the Community
Calluna Upcycling works closely with the community to share our knowledge and skills. We run workshops where new sewers can learn how to upcycle fabric, and we have created videos on youtube too so people at home can join in too : @callunacreations. These workshops are open to new sewers, but they especially focus on helping people who might need extra support, such as those who are unemployed or living with disabilities.
The skills taught in these workshops don’t just help reduce waste—they can also give people confidence, creativity, and even new job opportunities.
Calluna also gives back by donating 10% of every item sale to the seven hospice, Charity Number 512394. This means that every upcycled product sold supports good causes, such as helping the those with terminal illnesses and their friends and family.
Calluna also does recycling for good causes by donating large quantities of XL totes and XL drawstring bags to local charity shops for them to sell and make money for themselves, as well as the Shrewsbury Arc for use by the homeless and for the workers there.
The Power of Upcycling
One of the most exciting things about Calluna Upcycling is how creative my sewers are. They take items that others might throw away and turn them into something new and useful. For example, an old table cloth might be restored into a stylish handbag, or worn-out banner could be turned into a trendy tote.
These creations show how we can think differently about waste. Instead of throwing things away, here at Calluna we encourage people to see the potential in old items and give them a second life.
